The neem tree, (Azadirachta indica), is a rapidly-growing tree whose leaves are exploited for a range of uses. Other popular terminologies used to refer to the tree include Indian lilac, nim, nimba and margosa. The tree is also referred to as neemba in Sanskrit. The term neem is hence extracted from neemba which means proper health and well-being. The neem tree is in the same family as mahogany and is also quite popular as a reliable source of timber. Compared to other trees, the tree has a faster growth rate. The leaves of the neem tree, are the most important plant part. They are available and can be collected all year round. The seeds from the tree also contain a sizeable amount of phytonutrients. The leaves and seeds are also used to obtain neem oil, which is used for various purposes. Other useful parts of the tree include fruits, flowers, roots, and barks. The green neem leaves have sharp serrated edges with a pointed shape. Others have an irregular shape. They have a smooth feel and appear shiny on the eye. The leaves could be boiled, crushed, and used to make a paste or blended and used in their raw form. The extract from the leaves has a bitter taste. It is therefore used sparingly in different capacities. Most people add honey to try and subdue the bitter taste.
